While Javier (Laresca) is out killing, Manuel/Alan (Fiennes) goes to Ella's (Mol) house
to return her rosary. He lingers too long and she comes home before he leaves. Yet inside
he never wanted to leave and had to see her again. She is at first cautious to see a near stranger
in her room, but something inescapable draws her to him. When he finally reveals his true
identity, she is awashed in tears. They kiss and quickly consummate their reunion by making love, an
act that might make sense in Hollywood love stories, but very odd in reality. It is true that Mol's
character is feeling lonely, but after a decade and a half of being apart, you'd think they would outgrow
such rash behavious just a bit. Once again, it reveals the flaws in Schrader's script and the area
of storytelling where he is noticeably weak.
